Ferry across the Mersey in the background

The love locks of Liverpool docks

From a distance, they look like barnacles or seaweed – draped dramatically over railings which face the Mersey. The Ferry Cross the Mersey in the background. Closer inspection reveals that this is no ordinary decoration.

They’re a huge crowd of love locks. A proliferation of declarations of love. Each one representing a special bond or relationship …

A simple act that articulates a powerful statement.

I have never seen love locks before. I didn’t know of the concept of symbolically locking your love up and throwing away the key. When I looked into it a bit more I found that it is a relatively recent phenomenon. Probably starting in the early 2000s in earnest.

The Love Locks of Liverpool Docks

There are big ones and little ones, shiny ones and dull ones

There are strong ones, dinky ones and rusty ones

Some that make you think and some that make you see

Some that make you laugh and some that make you sad

The one thing that they all share – the reason that they are there …

… is LOVE

I can only draw one conclusion from this fabulous display:

There is a LORRA LORRA love in Liverpool docks!
